Things CAN be better

Are you fed up with training that doesn’t make a difference? Me too.

In fact, I spend my time trying to stop that happening.

A big part of that is not running training though – it’s focusing on finding out what’s not working in aid projects and coming up with ways to fix that. I would love to get rid of the idea that we should just accept poor performance as part of life in the aid sector.

As an aid worker and manager, I quickly got frustrated with the way that effort, time and resources were wasted.

But as one manager, there was only so much I could do to change it. So I switched my professional focus to training and capacity building. I’ve worked with many INGOs, UN agencies and the Red Cross, designing and delivering training courses – and helping them get real impact from it.

But it’s not just aid projects where there’s wasted time and effort and lower impact – it’s in aid sector training too. That’s why I take a big picture view to understand the real issues you’ve got and not leap to training when something else will help more.

I’ve worked in the aid sector for more than twenty years – both as a manager and learning specialist.

Before becoming a consultant, I was the global lead on humanitarian capacity building for CARE International, one of the world’s largest aid agencies. In 2023, I co-founded the Gender in Emergencies Group, a social enterprise that tries to change how the humanitarian sector works on gender. There, I design and deliver training to hundreds of people a year.

Expertise

Get your team the skills they need to make a difference

I get to the heart of the problems you’re facing – and give you practical solutions. This stops capacity building projects from being a distraction and changes how your team work. That lets you focus on what you need to do, not on dealing with the fallout from what they haven’t done.

Bespoke Approach

Every organisation is unique and together we’ll create something just for you. Each project is unique, too – because the same problem can have a different cause in a different team. We’ll find the right approach for your situation.

Practical Training

The training I run focuses on the specific, practical skills your team needs. They’re built so learners either work on real projects as they learn, or on ones just like the real thing. We make it as real as possible so the training is easy to use on the job. That makes it engaging, interactive and relevant, too.

Best Fit for You

We don’t use a single approach, tool or piece of software. We work with you to find out what will work for your team, their level of tech skill, experience and so on. Whether it’s a simple checklist or a multi-week online course, making sure that it will actually be used is vital.

Expertise

Proven Expertise

I’ve got a track record of helping humanitarian agencies like yours – with both high-impact training and consulting. I’ll help you get to the heart of your issues, and offer you ways to fix them that give you clear improvements.

Customer Testimonials

What do clients say?

The training course was very useful for me and so was the additional information you sent.

Ghislaine Fouda, Country Director, Cote d’Ivoire

The workshop and the follow-up mails, as well as the preparatory work, were extremely useful.

I hope to have the opportunity to take another workshop with you.

Martin Dickler, Country Director, Haiti

There’s been a massive impact on our response work. In terms of the champions which we groomed along the way, there’s a massive change in the desire to lead, to get the right approach and a full understanding that we have a humanitarian mandate.

Abel Whande, Country Director, South Sudan

This course was very useful because it was very practical, and I learned a lot of things much quicker, due to the way it was delivered. It was really worth the time. I’ve learned a lot in terms of how to get things done in general. Things that I can apply in my day-to-day job, not just in humanitarian response.
