Humanitarian training to get ready for the future

Be ready for what comes next – scale up, scale down, transformation – whatever the world throws at you.

Humanitarian work is full of change, but many offices run as if things will be the same today, tomorrow and in two years time. But you know – and we know – they won’t.

Your team needs to be ready for change. That means strong basic skills, streamlined processes, and training on emerging trends.

We help you get that – through practical training, deep analysis and new ways of working.

Who am I

Build the foundations for change

I’ve been improving the impact of humanitarian aid agencies for over 20 years – first as a manager, then a consultant.

The last 14 years, I’ve worked only on capacity development. I’ve created dozens of courses and trained thousands of aid workers. For five years, I led humanitarian capacity building for one of the world’s largest aid agencies, CARE International.  Since becoming a consultant, I’ve built and run training for INGOs, UN agencies, the Red Cross and social enterprises.

Practical, skills-based training changes how your team and your partners work. Each project is tailored to you, because we conduct a deep analysis of your needs.

I help your team get ready for change, by making sure they have the skills they need today and tomorrow – project management, budgeting, coordination, preparedness and leadership

How I help you:
  • Training Design & Delivery: Face-to-face or online, I design practical humanitarian training your team can use right away – focused on your specific needs
  • Performance and Learning Needs Analysis: Find the root causes of your challenges, whether training could help, and what kind.

  • Improve your processes and tools: Create guides, suggest new ways of working and build tools for your team.

Services

How do your team get ready for the future?

There are four areas to focus on – Finding Your Way, Increasing Skills, Improving Systems and Collaboration. This covers all the bases to improve your team’s performance – and your programmes’ impact. And it’s specific to you.

Find The Path

Look deeply and see what’s needed for change to work. Identify your barriers, see new opportunities and get a way forward where change will stick.

Improve Skills

Get your team the skills they need to excel and create impact. You need training programmes that are engaging, practical and tailored to you. Cover the fundamentals so your foundations are strong – and then build with new topics and ideas

New Ways of Working

References, documentation and new ways of working can help more than training. Get a head start by looking at the whole picture.

Work Together

Overcome road blocks in your team. Focus on the next steps you have to take, and bring objections into the open. That way you build trust so they can move forward together.

My Approach

How our projects work

Get the support that’s right for you – not cookie-cutter solutions.

Free Online
Consultation

We talk about your unique situation and goals. We will understand your programmes, your team’s current skills, and why they might need to change.

Custom Analysis and Solution Design

Next, we do a deep analysis. This finds what needs to change – and gives you fresh ideas how to do that. With you, we’ll decide if training will help, and what kind. If training won’t help, we’ll show you something that will, like coaching, references, or process redesign.

Tailored Training

We’ll train your team, and focus on the highest-priority, practical skills they need. That creates impact. Face-to-face, online, or a blend of both, the training is challenging, fun and easy to apply.

Ongoing Support and Impact

One-time training is rarely enough to change how people work. We will arrange extra learning activities spread out over weeks or months – before and after a “course” takes place. And we’ll work with you to show the impact on your team’s performance.

Customer Testimonials

What do clients say?

The training course was very useful for me and so was the additional information you sent.

Ghislaine Fouda, Country Director, Cote d’Ivoire

The workshop and the follow-up mails, as well as the preparatory work, were extremely useful.

I hope to have the opportunity to take another workshop with you.

Martin Dickler, Country Director, Haiti

There’s been a massive impact on our response work. In terms of the champions which we groomed along the way, there’s a massive change in the desire to lead, to get the right approach and a full understanding that we have a humanitarian mandate.

Abel Whande, Country Director, South Sudan

This course was very useful because it was very practical, and I learned a lot of things much quicker, due to the way it was delivered. It was really worth the time. I’ve learned a lot in terms of how to get things done in general. Things that I can apply in my day-to-day job, not just in humanitarian response.

Frequently Asked Questions

And answers you might want to have

I have worked in the non-profit sector for my entire career, since 2010 entirely focused on building capacity in humanitarian NGOs. I know the reality of managing aid projects in the field, and am an expert in learning design and running training – using research-backed methods

Because my process starts with analysis, we’ll discover the root causes of your challenges as the first step in any work – and if my services won’t help resolve them, we won’t go any further! Often skills development or adapting how you work is a big part of the issue – and then I can custom design training that addresses the specific gap and gets your team practicing the skills they need.

I’m not interested in running training if it won’t actually help you. The analysis I do is much more profound than other training and learning consultants, and looks at systems, processes, motivation and environment – as well as team skills. If skills aren’t the issue, we’ll either agree to leave it, or I can support you with references or job aids, or adapting your processes. If skills are the issue, then we can design training that is designed so your learners practice those skills, often many times, so that they actually get better at them.

Yes, I have a free course on How Adults Learn you might find interesting . And I have a couple of pre-designed courses I can offer. Normally, we need to design something together, because two different organisations with the same “problem” might have two completely different causes – and each will need a different approach to fix it

Normally I don’t, as not many learning designers have the same criteria around the amount of skills practice learners need to do, how that practice is supported, the spacing and structure of practice activities and so on. But I don’t rule it out and I’m interested in your project – feel free to book a call with me, and we’ll talk about it.

I’ve trained all sorts of groups in my career, from environmental activists to INGO global leaders. I’ve worked with community groups, international NGO networks, global INGOs and the Red Cross. A lot of my work is with international organisations, but I’m very happy working with aid organisations of any type.

Let’s try to give you a helpful answer, rather than just telling you that “each project is unique and it depends on all these different factors…” – which is true!. For a project to be done quickly, you need to be extremely available, and you need to be able to arrange interviews with all the different stakeholders needed for the analysis quickly. Analysis and design take several weeks each. If all your people are available, you’re in a position to agree what we do right away (no long approval or consultation processes within your organisation) and the project is not overly complicated, we can have something ready to deliver in four to six weeks.

This really does depend on the project! If the analysis shows that training won’t help that much, or we just need some short information sessions, then the costs for the training component will be pretty low. If the project involves me delivering a six-week online course for a group of 30 people, it will be a lot higher. Most of the time, even the most basic projects don’t come out below $5000, because of the amount of analysis work. But contact me and let’s discuss your specific situation.

What normally works best is if I work with one or more experts from your organisation to help design the training, to make sure that any technical content matches with your approaches. For delivery, like a lot of professional trainers, I’m pretty adaptable. I know a good amount about a lot of topics – I’ve led courses on finance, quantitative analysis, gender, communications skills, reporting, facilitation, and more. I do a lot of management and leadership training because good management is so important to things running well. I  have a small group of technical experts that I can pull in for additional ideas or support if we need.

A huge amount. The analysis guides most of what we do, and you play a massive role in that. That will set the overall direction and focus of any project. We will coordinate closely to make sure the work is still on track and that we’re tackling the right challenges, the right way.

Absolutely not. Ask anyone who knows me and they will confirm this to you –  I LOVE talking about training, learning and improving performance. If you’ve got a vague idea about a project, or are just stuck with a challenge, feel free to book a call with me – with no obligations at all.
